Vintage Guess: how to identify (labels & more)

Learn to identify vintage Guess! We're compiling a record of vintage brands sold in the shop, and documenting their labels and styles. We use historic advertisement materials (e.g., magazines and newspapers) to assist with dating. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you think that something was documented incorrectly!

 

Guess was founded in Los Angeles in 1981, and started as a denim manufacturer. Guess was reported to have moved their sewing operations to Mexico in 1997, and later throughout East and Southeast Asia. Clothing produced in the United States is typically from the 1980s to mid 1990s. You can see examples of their labels and styles through the decades, or shop vintage Guess in the shop, here

Guess labels and styles through the decades

c. 1980s

Women's high-rise medium to dark wash denim pants. The pants are made in the USA (indicative of 1980s-1990s) and are marked "a Georges Marciano Design".

c. 1980s-1990s

Women's 1980s black denim high waisted shorts. The shorts were made in the USA, and have a label with a red grid. 

c. Late 1990s

Men's late 1990s floral button down shirt. The shirt has a solid black sewn in Guess tag, and was manufactured in Korea. 

c. 1990s - early 2000s

Men's leather zip up jacket. The tag is unique to Guess' leather designs, and the Korea-based manufacturing indicates the piece is late 90s to early 2000s.
